Braga stages comeback to defeat Heerenveen 2-1

By: Porter | December 5th, 2008

While Heerenveen will naturally be disappointed in losing 2-1 to Portuguese side Braga 2-1, Trond Sollied can take solace in a solid effort and a significantly improved overall play. Well-traveled veteran Gerald Sibon gave Heerenveen the lead nineteen minutes into the match as he curled a free-kick in from twenty-five meters. Down by one in-front of their home fans, Braga fought back and ten minutes before the break Luis Aguiar delivered a perfect cross for Columbian international Wason Rentería to re-direct into the match. Four minutes before the hour mark, Aguiar launched a brilliant thirty meter free-kick to the back of the net to give Braga the 2-1 lead. Heerenveen pushed to level up until the final moment but each effort was denied and the match ended with Braga earning an important victory and advancing to the next round. Unfortunately beyond the loss Heerenveen came out of the match with a number of injuries with Mika Väyrynen, Gerald Sibon and Croatian international Danijel Pranjić likely out for this weekends against Willem II.
